Warriors News · 2019-2020 Athletic Awards: OHSAA Courageous Student Award

Dayton Christian Warriors,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 athletic awards ceremony! The athletic department is excited to continue to recognize our senior athletes for their amazing academic and athletic achievements this year!

The Ohio High School Athletic Association annually recognizes a “Courageous Student” in each high school. This student either currently has or has overcome, a serious illness, injury, or disability. They have overcome great adversity in a positive way. This student has displayed tremendous courage against overwhelming odds. This award is intended to bring credit to a very special student who has been involved in, or supportive of, the interscholastic athletic program, and who deserves recognition for courage.

Luke Smith will receive this year’s OHSAA Courageous Student Award. Luke tore his ACL in Week 9 of the 2018 football season which was during his junior year. Luke has displayed tremendous courage and determination to return to playing football by his senior season. Luke overcame a lot of challenges and worked tirelessly after ACL surgery focusing on his diet, lifting weights, doing core work, completing rehab exercises, and diligently icing his knee. Luke went from 180 lbs post ACL surgery to a more muscular and fit 210 lbs for his senior season. Luke was an integral member of our football team this past fall which advanced to the 2019 OHSAA Division VI playoffs.

Throughout his injury, Luke found blessing through the suffering. After his senior football season, Luke decided to serve as a student athletic trainer under our ATC, Jenny Sumpter-Maher, for the winter sports season. Luke learned first aid, taping skills, rehabilitation techniques, proper stretching, and even attended a course on basic skills for the athletic training student aide. Luke soon discovered a passion for what he aimed to do post high school graduation, which is to pursue a career in sports medicine.

Luke has been accepted to Wright State University as a Sports Science major with the Sports Medicine Concentration to become a certified athletic trainer. Luke will be the first person in his family to go to college and he was even admitted into Wright State’s competitive honors program! Congratulations to Luke for your incredible story of overcoming odds, facing adversity, and being a courageous and gritty Dayton Christian Warrior!

Awards can be picked up in the Athletic Office next Tuesday and Wednesday.
